Quote of the Day

Preschooler:  Ms. Shedd, I'm so proud of you for having your birthday.

2nd Preschooler:  I'm going to get you a big, beautiful, red flower with beautiful red sparkles for your birthday.

3rd Preschooler:  Ms. Shedd, where are you going to have your birthday?  Bounce & Play?

Celebrating a birthday with 4 year olds is a lot of fun.

Quote of the Day

In the pretend play area today, children were going on a trip to Chicago.

Teacher asked, "What are you going to do when you get there?"

Child (age 4) responded, "We're gonna shake it up & then break it down in Chicago!"

First Day of School

New Preschool Student to Teacher: "Are you having a nice and relaxing day?"
Does a preschool teacher ever have a relaxing day?
No.

Last year on day one...

Crying preschool student: I want my mommy.
Teacher:  You'll see your mommy after school.  Your mommy wants you to be happy at school.
Preschooler: My mommy wouldn't do this to me.

La Escuela Ahora

"La escuela ahora! ... that's what one of my new students said pleadingly yesterday when I stood up to say goodbye after visiting her at her home.  She burst into tears when she realized she couldn't go with me to start school right then and there.

Are we ready for school to start?

Yes and no.

We could use a few more evenings, like this one spent at Walnut Creek.

We were practically the only people there!

Here Asher is apparently getting ready to clip some coupons for back to school shopping at Target!  Nice!

Goodbye, Peep

Today I attended a memorial service for Peep, the chick.  It was probably the most hysterical memorial service I will ever attend!   Highlights included attendees clucking and flapping their arms like chicken wings & the eulogy, which referenced Peep's mean siblings and the fact that Peep's burial took place hours before his memorial service!  Somehow I was  nominated to read the eulogy, written by one of our teachers.  Peep hatched at school & lived with us at school this week, including a whole day in my office.  Unfortunately, poor little Peep couldn't walk.  One of my teacher friends tried to save him, and he was briefly adopted as our school pet.  We had a lot of fun with little Peep this week & were sorry to see him go.  Unfortunately I don't have a picture of Peep because all I had at school was my camera phone, which didn't take very good pictures in my office lighting.

Petting Farm Fun

Today we packed up the preschoolers and headed out to a petting farm.  It was hilarious watching the kids interact with the animals.  They were equal parts scared silly and totally excited when the camel first reached her head out to say hello!

Funny Things Kids Say

Things heard around school recently...

"I'm going to be a ninja spy when I grow up.  Can you find a class for me where I can learn how to be a ninja spy?" --2nd grader

"I have pig's eye."  (pink eye) --Kindergartener

"Do you sleep on a giant pizza?" --Preschooler

Pizza!

Yesterday morning was spent making pizzas with preschoolers on our field trip to Mellow Mushroom.

Everyone made a personal pizza!

We had a blast, and the pizzas turned out great!  It was so very generous of Mellow Mushroom to give us this cool experience and over 45 pizzas free of charge!!

Green Eggs & Ham

Do you like green eggs and ham?
Do you like them in a box or with a fox?
Do you like them in a house or with a mouse?
How about on a boat or with a goat?

I do not like to eat green eggs and ham, but I do like to cook them with the kids at school.
We cooked up a batch of green eggs and ham (and turkey too for the non-pork eaters) this morning.
Some of the kids thought the green eggs were playdoh.  One looked at me with sad, sad eyes and asked why they had to eat playdoh for snack!

Happy birthday to Dr. Seuss by the way.  It's a week-long celebration around here!
